Charming conversion in village setting

Charming conversion in village setting

Of all the buildings which are best suited to residential conversion, Victorian schools work really well, usually situated within established communities and with classical architecture with high gables and tall windows which allow for plenty of light.

The origins are clearly evident at The Old School House in Houghton, a little village near Stockbridge, in the heart of the Test Valley. The attractive brick and flint elevations are typical of a Hampshire Victorian school building. Once inside, however, there is little to suggest the former use and the space has been arranged as a very comfortable family house.

A welcoming reception hall is protected from the elements by an enclosed porch and doors lead off to ground floor rooms, with stairs rising from here to the bedrooms. The principal space is the superb sitting room; a lovely room with large windows, a glazed door to the garden and a Jetmaster open fireplace. The galley style kitchen is fitted with plenty of storage on both sides and although this leads through to a breakfast room, there is also a formal dining room at the front. The kitchen also has a door to a boiler room.

Three good size bedrooms are arranged off the landing, one with an adjoining bathroom, together with the family bathroom.

Leading off the village lane is a gravel driveway where there is parking for at least two cars and a small kitchen garden to one side. Gated access leads through to a truly lovely cottage garden, beautifully kept with an array of established specimen trees and shrubs and wonderful through the year. There is also an Amdega summer house.

Historical setting for pretty city cottage

Historical setting for pretty city cottage

Situated on Hyde Church Path, this very pretty brick and flint cottage lies within a historical part of Winchester. Lying just outside the city boundary, Hyde was the site of a fine monastery and when the abbey church was consecrated in 1110, the bodies of Alfred the Great, his wife Ealhswith, and his son Edward the Elder were carried in state through Winchester to be interred before the high altar. Their royal presence made Hyde Abbey a popular pilgrimage destination.

Although Hyde Abbey was dissolved and demolished in 1539, the area established as a village on the edge of the city and the fine abbey gatehouse and the parish church of St Bartholomew survive, lending this quaint corner of Winchester a distinctive character and charm.

Nestling within this setting the pretty cottage has two reception rooms and a kitchen, with a door to the attractive enclosed garden, with two double bedrooms upstairs. Permit parking is available.

Today this part of Winchester is hugely popular with commuters due to the proximity of the mainline station and it also lies within walking distance of all the amenities within the vibrant city centre, leisure amenities and acres of open parkland.

Pearsons asks a monthly rent of £1,200 and an appointment to view may be made by calling the Winchester branch on 01962 853344.

Great opportunity for short term rental

Great opportunity for short term rental

A lovely period townhouse at Orams Arbour, close to the centre of Winchester, will be available for a short term furnished rental this autumn.

The house has been beautifully modernised whilst keeping much of its original charm and offers very flexible living accommodation over four floors and could be the perfect bolt hole for someone looking to fill a short term gap.

A spacious, open plan living and dining room has a log burner and is painted throughout in white. The kitchen has been recently fitted with smart units and integrated appliances and bifold doors lead to a nicely laid out rear garden which leads to the garage and up to a stunning terrace from where there are city views.

There is a good size double bedroom at the basement level which has storage and a cloakroom so could be an ideal guest room.

On the first floor is a master bedroom with en suite shower room, a bathroom and another ‘snug’ area which is currently used as a study. There would be room for a sofa bed here.

The second floor bedroom has built in single beds and is an attractive, bright room.

Parking is available outside the property to the front and there is also a garage at the rear with a parking space.

Winkworth in Winchester will be happy to discuss the flexible terms of this opportunity and enquiries should be directed to the office on 01962 866777.
